New Build Painting in Christchurch — What to Expect
# New Build Painting in Christchurch — What to Expect From Start to Finish

If you're building a new home in Christchurch and trying to understand the painting and plastering process — what happens when, how long it takes, and what it costs — this article covers the full picture.
We work with builders, architects, and homeowners on new build projects across Christchurch and the Selwyn district every year. Here's exactly how it works.

## The New Build Painting Process — Stage by Stage
### Stage 1: Pre-Stop Inspection
Once the framing is up and GIB board is fixed, we conduct a pre-stop inspection before anything is applied. We check that:
- All GIB board is correctly fixed and any damaged sheets are replaced
- Stopping angles and beads are correctly installed at corners and windows
- Any trades penetrations are resolved before we start
- The build is dry enough (humidity within GIB board must be below 19%)
This step prevents problems downstream. Skipping it is why some new builds end up with visible joins or cracking within the first year.
### Stage 2: Gib Stopping — Three Coats
New build stopping follows a three-coat process:
Coat 1 (Base/Tape Coat): Paper or mesh tape is embedded into joint compound across all joins. Screw dimples are filled. Corner beads and stop beads are coated. This coat must fully cure before proceeding.
Coat 2 (Fill Coat): A wider, flatter application that bridges out from the join and starts to blend the board surface. The key skill here is feathering — getting the edges to taper imperceptibly into the board surface.
Coat 3 (Skim/Finish Coat): Final thin coat applied to all stopped areas, sometimes extended to cover full wall surfaces for premium Level 5 finishes. Sanded between coats where needed.
Total drying time between coats: 12–48 hours depending on conditions.
### Stage 3: Priming
Once stopping is complete and sanded:
- All surfaces receive a full primer coat
- This seals the GIB facing paper and stopped areas equally, ensuring even paint absorption
- Any "holidays" (missed spots or thin areas) become visible at this stage and are corrected
Priming is critical. Painting over unprimed GIB will result in flashing and uneven sheen that's nearly impossible to fix without stripping back.
### Stage 4: First Finish Coat
Walls and ceilings receive their first finish coat. At this stage we also paint all the details:
- Skirtings, architraves, and door frames
- Window reveals and sills
- Cupboard interiors (if specified)
- Garage and laundry if included in scope
### Stage 5: Second Finish Coat (Full Paint Spec)
Most quality new build specifications call for two finish coats on walls and ceilings for complete coverage and a consistent sheen. Woodwork (skirtings, joinery) typically gets two coats of semi-gloss or gloss.
### Stage 6: Final Inspection and Touch-Ups
We walk through the completed property and address any defects before handover. Final touch-ups are done after other trades have completed their work — electricians fitting covers, plumbers finishing fixtures, etc. — to leave the site paint-perfect.

## New Build Paint Specifications — What to Ask For
Not all builders' paint specs are equal. Here's what a quality spec looks like:
| Item | Minimum Spec | Premium Spec |
|------|-------------|-------------|
| Gib finish level | Level 3 | Level 4–5 |
| Wall coats | 1 primer + 1 finish | 1 primer + 2 finish |
| Ceiling coats | 1 primer + 1 finish | 1 primer + 2 finish |
| Woodwork | 1 undercoat + 1 finish | 1 undercoat + 2 finish |
| Garage | Unfinished | Primed and painted |
| Paint product | Standard grade | Premium (Dulux Wash&Wear, Aquanamel) |
If you're building through a project builder, ask to see the paint specification in writing. A budget-saving spec that cuts finish coats or specifies Level 3 stopping will be visible for the life of the home.

## How Long Does New Build Painting Take?
This varies significantly by house size, season, and scope.
| House Size | Typical Duration |
|-----------|-----------------|
| Small home (< 150m²) | 2–3 weeks |
| Average home (150–250m²) | 3–5 weeks |
| Large home (250m²+) | 5–8 weeks |
| Architecturally designed / bespoke | 6–12 weeks |
These timelines cover gib stopping through final coat. Weather affects the stopping phase significantly — coats take longer to dry in cold or humid conditions.

## New Build Painting Costs in Christchurch
New build painting is quoted on total wall and ceiling area, plus a per-lineal-metre rate for joinery.
| Cost Component | Typical Range |
|---------------|--------------|
| Gib stopping only (per m² of GIB) | $15–$30/m² |
| Stop and paint package (per m² floor area) | $55–$100/m² |
| Architectural or high-spec finish | $100–$150+/m² |
A standard 200m² new build typically runs $11,000–$20,000 for a full gib stop and paint package. Architectural homes with Level 5 finish, extensive feature walls, or complex detailing will sit above this range.
We provide detailed, fixed-price quotes with clear inclusions. No surprises.

## Frequently Asked Questions
Do you handle gib stopping and painting, or just painting?
Both. We're one of the few Christchurch companies that handles the full scope — gib stopping, priming, and painting — all under one team. This removes the scheduling gap between trades and gives us end-to-end accountability for the finish.
When should I bring you in on a new build project?
Ideally, before the GIB goes up. We can review the specification, flag any concerns about the build programme, and confirm our availability. Bringing us in early means we can plan stopping coats around the overall programme rather than rushing to fit in around other trades.
Can you work to a fixed price?
Yes. We provide firm, fixed-price quotes based on confirmed plans and specifications. If the scope changes (added rooms, spec upgrades), we agree on a variation in writing before proceeding.
Do you provide a Dulux-backed guarantee on new builds?
Yes. As Dulux Accredited Painters, we can provide a manufacturer-backed paint system warranty on new build projects. Ask us for the specific warranty documentation applicable to your build.
